Our next film is a blend of drama, nature documentary, and ethnographic film. THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL weaves a magical tale about a nomadic Mongolian family who reunite a rejected baby camel with its mother. When a mother camel refuses to sustain her child, the keepers of the camels often reunite them in a ritual with folk music and chanting, the results of which elicit deep emotion--even causing the mother camel to weep real tears. Exploring more than just traditional ritual, this film speaks to the very nature of love--the baby camel cannot survive without his mother, just as no animal or person can. Directors Byambasuren Davaa and Luigi Falorni drew upon the documentary style of Robert Flaherty (NANOOK OF THE NORTH), who recreated events to comprehensively portray his subjects. The pair tirelessly filmed spontaneous events for much of the mother-baby story, but chose to recreate certain moments in the family's daily life. A particularly humorous and insightful example involves a young boy who clearly feels conflicted between his family life and his desire for a more Western life. The film creates a contrast between the two, showing the boy listening to traditional fables in his family's tent, but then dreaming about owning a television. This spare film provides a visually enchanting and unique learning e. In the bustling heart of Rio de Janeiro, a young boy witnesses the accidental death of his mother. When a lonely, retired schoolteacher (Montenegro) reluctantly agrees to care for the boy, they begin a journey across the countryside on which they learn valuable lessons about each other and the human spirit. The Center of Light is on Milwaukee's East side, near the Lake, two blocks north of the intersection of Brady Street and Prospect Avenue. If you need directions, you can use Mapquest (1841 N Prospect Ave), or you can call me at 414.791.7091. There's a "Center of Light" sign in our front yard. Parking is available in our lot behind the building. Please feel free to call with any questions. Looking forward to seeing this one with you all!! In Peace, Rev Rebecca.

Hi All: Sorry for any confusion caused by last minute changes here! We are seeing Romero tonight as planned. Here is a description of the film: John Duigan’s Romero tells the true story of Latin America’s best-known and most revered modern martyr, Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Goldamez, a man whom John Paul II described as a "zealous pastor who gave his life for his flock." Where Romero excels as a film is in its depiction of its subject’s gradual transformation. Like Richard Burton in Becket, Raul Julia’s Romero is a man morally transformed by office and responsibility. Yet whereas Becket becomes a new man virtually overnight, Romero goes through a more organic, gradual process, responding to specific crises. I look forward to seeing this one with you all!

Please join us at The Center of Light to view the film "House of D." Set in NYC, House of D is a "coming of age" story of a 13 y/o boy, Tommy (Anton Yelchin), being raised by a single mom (Tea Leoni). This boy befriends the janitor, Pappass (Robin Williams) of his Catholic school & is his co-worker as a delivery boy @ the local butcher shop. As an adult, Tommy (David Duchovny) is an illustrator living in Paris, now with a family of his own. Tommy endeavors to resolve past issues & present relationships so that he can 'grow up.' The film also stars Robin Williams daughter (Zelda), who is Tommy's first "crush" & Erykah Badu as "Lady" / Bernadette, a woman who is imprisioned in the "Women's House of D". The House of D was a womens prison in Manhattan where inmates could freely talk to those passing by along the street, built in 1934, Women's House of D was later razed in 1974 for a park. Duchovny also directed & wrote the screen play. The Center of Light is on Milwaukee's East side, near the Lake, two blocks north of the intersection of Brady Street and Prospect Avenue. We have rescheduled this film to be shown at a new location. Please note that this film will be shown in the theater of the BLATZ CONDOS at 270 East Highland Ave (between Juneau and Highland on Broadway...please check in with the Concierge and tell them you are joining Rev Rebecca in the theater).
This film third film by celebrated painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name. The film tells the remarkable tale of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), the world-renowned editor of French ELLE magazine, who suffered a stroke and was paralyzed by the inexplicable "locked in" syndrome at the age of 43. Bauby's only way of communicating with the outside world was by blinking with one eye, and after several dedicated helpers--a string of impossibly beautiful women (Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josee Croze, Olatz Lopez Garamendia, Anne Consigny)--helped him to speak through this seemingly irrelevant gesture, he began to produce the words that would form his memoir. Along the way, as he swam in and out of consciousness, memories from his past swelled into the present, resulting in a cinematic experience that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Schnabel somehow manages to convey Bauby's internal life with remarkable clarity, employing first-person perspective, striking cinematography (by the always great Janusz Kaminski), and Amalric's pained, life-affirming monologues. The result is a wholly original experience, a painful and tender portrait of a life that is made all the more exhilarating because of its close proximity to death. This film is deeply moving and will get you to reflect on many things you may currently take for granted. Please do join us for this special showing!
